How to Wash Comforters and Bulky Bedding at The Washboard
April 28, 2026
Home washers struggle with king-size comforters, heavy quilts, and bulky bedding. Even if you can cram them in, they don't get truly clean, and they put serious stress on your machine.
The Washboard in Murray has large-capacity washers designed specifically for these items. Here's how to use them properly.
Choosing the Right Washer Size
We have multiple washer sizes at our Murray location. For comforters and bulky bedding, you'll typically need one of our larger machines.
General guidelines:
- Twin/Full comforters: Medium or large washer
- Queen comforters: Large washer
- King comforters: Extra-large washer
- Multiple blankets or sheets: Can combine in large/extra-large washers
The item should have room to move freely in the drum. If you have to force it in or pack it tightly, move up to the next size.
Not sure? Our attendants (on-site 8 AM to 5 PM daily) can help you choose the right machine for your specific items.
Before You Wash
Check the care label first. Most comforters are machine washable, but some (especially down or silk-filled) may have specific requirements.
Pre-treat any stains before washing. Use a small amount of stain remover on visible spots and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
Check for tears or loose seams. Washing can make small damage worse. Repair any issues before washing if possible.
Washing Settings
For most comforters and bedding:
Temperature: Warm or hot water kills dust mites and allergens. Use cold for delicate fabrics.
Cycle: Normal or heavy-duty cycle for most items. Delicate cycle for down-filled comforters.
Detergent: Less is more with bulky items. Use about half the amount you'd use for a regular load. Too much detergent is hard to rinse out of thick bedding.
Add the detergent first, then the item. This helps distribute soap evenly.
The Drying Process
This is the most important step. Improperly dried bedding can mildew or develop odors.
Use our large-capacity dryers and set them to medium or high heat (check care labels first).
Drying time: Expect 45-90 minutes depending on thickness. King comforters may need 90+ minutes.
Check frequently: Every 20-30 minutes, open the dryer and fluff/redistribute the item. This prevents clumping and ensures even drying.
The touch test: Feel the center and edges. If any part still feels damp or cool, keep drying. Bedding that feels "mostly dry" can mildew within days.
Special Considerations for Down Comforters
Down-filled comforters need extra care:
- Use gentle cycle and cold water
- Add a couple of clean tennis balls or dryer balls when drying
- Low or medium heat only
- Extra drying time (down takes longer)
- Make absolutely certain it's completely dry before storage
Down retains moisture easily, so take your time with the drying process.
How Often Should You Wash Bedding?
Comforters: 2-4 times per year, typically at season changes
Blankets: Every 2-3 months or as needed
Mattress pads: Every 1-2 months
Pillows (if machine washable): Every 3-6 months
Many Murray residents wash heavy bedding during spring and fall cleaning, then again mid-season if needed.
Why Not Wash at Home?
We hear this question often. Here's why The Washboard is better for bulky bedding:
Home washers:
- Too small for proper cleaning
- Can't handle the weight (leads to breakdown)
- Don't rinse thoroughly
- Take multiple loads for one item
- Cost more over time due to machine wear
The Washboard:
- Properly sized for any bedding
- One load, done right
- Thorough cleaning and rinsing
- Less time and effort for you
- No wear on your home machine
Cost for Washing Bulky Items
Prices vary by washer size, but expect:
- Medium washer: $3.50-5.00
- Large washer: $5.50-7.50
- Extra-large washer: $7.50+
Drying adds $0.25 per 7 minutes. Total cost for a king comforter (wash + dry) typically runs $10-15.
Compare that to dry cleaning, which often charges $25-40 for a comforter, and you're saving significantly while doing it yourself.
Best Times to Visit
We're open every day from 6 AM to 11 PM. For bulky bedding that requires longer drying times, we recommend:
- Weekday mornings (less busy, more dryer availability)
- Early afternoon (attendant on-site if you need help)
- Avoid Sunday evenings (busiest time)
Storage After Washing
Once clean and completely dry:
- Store in breathable bags or containers
- Avoid plastic bins that trap moisture
- Add cedar blocks or lavender sachets
- Keep in cool, dry places
Properly stored clean bedding stays fresh for months.
